Dare to Change PR

It’s been two years since we’ve had normal times.

Since spring 2020, we’ve endured a pandemic with lockdown, seen social justice and racism come to a head and rethought our approach to work creating the Great Resignation.

As we re-emerge, we see many taking stock of the world around them. Many do not want to go back to life as normal. They see this as a chance to finally have a clean start.

With issues like an utter lack of diversity in a very lily white PR industry and companies grappling with social justice issues on an enterprise scale, we are at a moment where we can change PR. Not to mention that we can change the world with PR.

Will we dare to change PR?

This is the question of the hour: As we re-emerge, will we dare to use PR to change the world? Will we change the PR world?

My mentors tell me that there is so much that feels different this time. I mean, diversity and work life balance are not new issues.

But this time, you have Gen Z among you. We are now your colleagues. We are not only ready to join the fight, we will pick up to lead the fight if needed. One report even called us hyper-focused on addressing societal ills.

Center Lecture lays down that triple dare

For our part, the Broom Center is ready to live by its mission to push the status quo. We invited Charlene Wheeless to the podium to rally us.

On March 1 at 4 p.m., Wheeless delivers the Broom Center’s 5th annual Allen H. Center Distinguished Lecture in Public Relations. During her talk she will share how she is daring to change the industry. Wheeless is a Black businesswoman in corporate America who has been fighting to push the status quo. She is the most recent chair of the Arthur W. Page Society, a bestselling author and is on the board of six different companies. Following Wheeless’ footsteps, we can all dare to make the change.

Honestly, I don’t even think we are going to need much encouraging. And that is why I’m encouraged by this moment.
