Who We Are
We care about the future of public relations. In fact, you might call it unyielding, relentless dedication. Named after the "professor of the profession," the Glen M. Broom Center of Professional Development in Public Relations
Center History
In 2012 the Glen M. Broom Center for Professional Development in Public Relations began. Since then, the center has been committed to improving the PR profession.
Dr. Glen Broom, the center’s namesake, directed the mission of the center and provided a vision for how the Broom Center could support junior faculty in public relations, PR students and practitioners. During the early days of the center, programs funded student travel to professional conferences and invested in real world learning opportunities for students. The center issued grants to junior PR faculty at San Diego State University, investing in their research. The Broom Center supported practitioners through workshops and other professional development events.
In 2019, the Broom Initiative launched. Refocused on the mission of investing in the people who push the practice forward, Dr. Broom’s vision for the center expanded beyond the mesa of the San Diego State University campus. The Broom Initiative is a series of funded projects within the Broom Center that are meant to invest in the people in PR who are improving the practice. This expansion opened grant opportunities to untenured, junior professors across the nation and created more support for the people who are pushing the status quo.
Though Dr. Broom passed away before the Broom Initiative officially launched, he was excited about the opportunities and positive difference it could make in supporting the people of PR. Today the Broom Center uses the Broom Initiative to maintain the strong legacy of Dr. Glen Broom in pushing people to be the best versions of their professional selves.
