Getting Ready for PRSA ICON Events
We are gearing up for a big week with the Broom Center, and welcoming two events on San Diego State University campus during the upcoming Public Relations Society of America ICON conference.
- On Friday we host the Commission on Public Relations Education West Coast Industry/Educator Summit in the Templo Mayor room inside the Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union (room 231 in the union)
- On Saturday we welcome the Public Relations Society of America’s Educators Academy for Super Saturday in Hardy Tower. We will be in Hardy 140 and 183.
Our Broom Center PR team put together these instructions to help those attending both events get ready for their time here.
There is a reason that so many people call San Diego “America’s Finest City.” Next week you’re going to see it yourself from atop the mesa at SDSU.
Weather Report for the Weekend
We would tell you to pack for perfect, but that might not be descriptive enough. Expect a high around 73 degrees and a low of 60 degrees. The mornings and nights are usually cooler, with a slight breeze. It’s the warmest during the mid-afternoon when the sun is out. Event spaces can sometimes get cool, so we love layers in SoCal.
General Helpful Hints
Attire: While it will be warm outside, the event rooms are much cooler. We suggest bringing a light jacket and comfortable shoes as there will be a bit of walking around campus.
Breakfast: A pastry assortment and coffee will be provided for breakfast.
Lunch: We will serve boxed lunches from Panera. There will be both indoor and outdoor seating available. Bring your camera, you’re going to want to take pictures in front of the scenic views from campus.
Stay Connected
We love to be social, so connect with us on social. Follow the Broom Center on Instagram (@broomcenter) or the SDSU School of Journalism & Media Studies on Facebook (@SanDiegoStateJMS). Share your day on your own social and talk about how you’re #pushingtheprofession with all you’re learning. You’ll hear a bit about our new #BroomInitiative on Friday, so we hope you’ll spread the word on that too. Our photographer will capture your memories and moments at the event, and you can quickly access these photos through our Google drive for the Friday or Saturday step & repeat pictures. Post and tag at will!
Six Degrees of Separation Oral History to Remember Dr. Glen Broom
To honor Dr. Glen Broom as a part of the Broom Initiative, we invite you to participate in the Six Degrees of Glen Broom. Remember when Stanley Milgram set out to research the “small world” problem? We think it is an even smaller academic PR world. Even if you didn’t personally know Glen Broom we bet you were connected to him.
Let’s see how many degrees you are away from Glen Broom, be it by having read his textbook or even personally knowing him. We’re making it easy for you to participate, and we hope you’ll be a part of this oral history project.
Here is how it works: fill out this short online form now. When you’re on the SDSU campus this weekend, look for our six degrees team. We have a professional photographer there to snap a portrait of you and we’ll ask you a quick follow-up question for the oral history. For your time, you can pick out one of our special gifts that we’re only giving to the six degree participants.
Virtual Reality Activity
Take a journey through the life of the Broom Center’s namesake, Dr. Glen Broom. You’ll get a look at how the legend became an icon through a virtual reality look at his life. The VR activity includes everything from early childhood highlights to his well-distinguished public relations career. We put the highlights into a 3-minute experience so you won’t miss a beat at the event. This opportunity to go back in time is available during lunchtime. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to honor Glen’s memory and reflect on the impact he had on the profession and PR research.
