Dr. Arthur Santana

Bio

Arthur D. Santana is an associate professor whose research focuses on print and online journalism. He is particularly interested in participatory media, user-generated content and online anonymity and civility. He also explores the intersection of journalism and politics, social media and news coverage of Latinxs.

His research has been published in Journalism & Mass Communication Quarterly, Journalism Practice, Journalism Studies, Newspaper Research Journal, The Journal of Social Media in Society and Journal of Information Technology & Politics.

His research has been featured in The New Yorker, Slate, The New York Times, The Washington Post and National Public Radio.

Prior to joining academia, Dr. Santana was a reporter and editor for 14 years in newsrooms across the country, including the San Antonio Express-News, The Seattle Times and The Washington Post. He has been the recipient of journalism awards from the Maryland-Delaware-D.C. Press Association, the Society of Professional Journalists, and the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. At the Post, he was part of a team of reporters who were nominated for the 2002 Pulitzer Prize in Public Service.

In 1993, he earned a B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin. He received an M.S. in 1996 from Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and in 2012, he earned his Ph.D. from the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.

Before joining SDSU, Dr. Santana was an assistant professor at the University of Houston. He is an editorial board member of Newspaper Research Journal and serves on the SPJ San Diego Pro Chapter Board.
