Bio

Xiaohan (Catherine) Hu is an assistant professor in the School of Journalism & Media Studies at San Diego State University. She received her Ph.D. in Communications and Media from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. She earned her M.S. in Advertising from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and B.A. in Advertising from Wuhan University in Wuhan, China.

Catherine’s research interests include interactive and digital advertising, media psychology, and consumer behavior. Her current research projects investigate the role of user control in affecting digital advertising effectiveness. Her work has been published in refereed journals including Journal of Interactive Advertising and Journal of Research in Interactive Marketing. Her research has also been presented at conferences including American Academy of Advertising, International Communication Association, and Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication. Catherine won the American Academy of Advertising Dissertation Competition Award in 2022.
