Aaron Gyllenhaal

Aaron Gyllenhaal

Mass Communication

https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaron-gyllenhaal/

Aaron is a public relations scholar with an interest in both the research and practice of this field. His passion for queer advocacy and crisis communication has led him to his thesis topic focusing on how belonging to a minoritized identity impacts crisis communication reception. After obtaining his degree, Aaron considered two potential directions for his career. One path is pursuing his Ph.D. in public relations and continuing down the route of public relations education and research. Alternatively, he would work in a public relations agency, hopefully specializing in crisis communication and applying his research to aid him in his practice of public relations. Aaron may do both, who knows! Either way, he plans on building off of the knowledge he has gained in this program to further both his career and understanding of the field of public relations.

He started to work harder in school and make new friends, and found a job that helped him become better at decision making. Belinda Mendoza

Belinda Mendoza

Belinda’s interest in mass communication and media studies came from a noticeable lack of diversity in the media and her own feelings of being underrepresented. Belinda is currently working at the San Diego Salvation Army Kroc Center, a local nonprofit, as a content creator with a specialization in social media. She enjoys being able to give back to the community through her work, which inspires her to work toward becoming head of marketing for a non-profit. Subsequently, she would love to use all the knowledge she’s learned through her education and work experience to create marketing that will have an impact on the greater good. Belinda also hopes to advance her career to the point where she can inspire and mentor others like herself, who have felt underrepresented or disadvantaged for any reason. Growing up in her small town of Johnstown, Pa., Kara was infatuated with her local newspaper and reading about current events on a national and international level. She knew she wanted an atypical college experience and chose to attend the U.S. Naval Academy for the adventure, close friendships and the opportunities that awaited. Being able to combine her love of the Navy with her interest in the media and community outreach led to her dream job in Navy public affairs. Every day Kara has served as a naval officer has been interesting and challenging, and she is often humbled by the level of responsibility given to her by her leaders. The highlights of her PAO career center around the moments when she gets to work with reporters, local communities, and outside organizations to help them better understand the U.S. Navy. These highlights have occurred across the world, in countries like the Republic of Palau and at home in America on the farthest-flung Aleutian island and in the hallowed halls of the Pentagon briefing room. By pursuing a graduate degree in media studies and mass communications, she is hoping to bring even more rigor to her work through proper research techniques, effective planning and comprehensive evaluations. Kara is also looking forward to the professional networking opportunities that a university like San Diego State can provide, as well as finally learning communications theories and practices from professional educators, something that she has missed in my career so far. Corinne is an artsy, bookworm from New Orleans who discovered a job field in the military that not only welcomes creativity, but demands it. Since joining the Coast Guard, she has had countless opportunities to embark on exciting adventures, meet amazing people, and tackle daunting challenges, all while using her artistic background to solve problems. Her job has allowed her to experience nearly all of the Coast Guard’s missions firsthand, although nothing has inspired her quite as much as witnessing Coast Guard members hoisting people from flooded houses and seeing the terror mingled with gratitude in the survivors’ eyes. Such experiences make her proud to tell the Coast Guard’s story and motivate her to soak up all the knowledge she can while studying at SDSU. Corinne has already learned so much about research, theory, writing/speaking with conviction, and teamwork. By focusing her thesis on cognitive responses to misinformation, Corinne hopes to uncover new insight into a serious crisis communication issue and bring actionable data back to her Coast Guard colleagues. She believes her time here at SDSU has already made her a better communicator and can’t wait to learn and improve even more.
