Required Journalism Core Curriculum

  • JMS 300 - Principles of Journalism
  • JMS 310W - Media Writing and Reporting
  • JMS 315 - Digital Media Principles and Design
  • JMS 420 - Public Affairs News Reporting
  • JMS 430 - Digital Journalism
  • JMS 489 - Research Methods in Mediated Communication
  • JMS 494 - Media Law and Ethics
  • JMS 550 - Multimedia News Lab


select two courses from the following list; students must meet prerequisites for each course:

  • JMS 445 - Television News Reporting and Producing
  • JMS 470 - Multimedia and Mobile Reporting
  • JMS 490 - Journalism Internship
  • JMS 495 - Advanced Topics in Media Writing and Skills
  • JMS 496 - DigiMedia 1-unit courses (Max 3 units)
  • JMS 529 - Data-driven Investigative Journalism

Additional Electives

Select 6 units from any JMS course numbered 300 and higher

Foreign Language

Competency (which is successfully completing the third college semester) is required in one foreign language.

Auxiliary Discipline

Complete at least 15 units, six units of which must be upper division, in ONE academic department outside of JMS. You may choose any 15 units from that department, as long as at least six units are numbered 300 and higher
