Dr. Valerie E. Barker

Until 2018, Dr. Valerie Barker was the chair of the JMS Digital & Social Media Research Project in the School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University. Her latter work focused on the processes underlying and outcomes from interactions with social media. As well, she has investigated the social identity processes associated with social networking sites regarding the role of gender, culture, and age. Dr. Barker’s work has appeared in the Journal of Broadcasting and Electronic Media, New Media and Society, Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking, and the Journal of Communication, among many others. Dr. Barker has authored numerous conference papers for which she is the recipient of 14 top paper awards. Her most recent publication (with Dr. Nathian Rodriguez) investigated selfies and identity presentation. She is currently working on a project about dating apps as forms of community.
