Topic: This session examines the workflow of an investigative story and the investigative team functions along with tips to keep everyone organized and on track. We’ll discuss all the stages of investigative and data reporting, tools to help you manage the project and how to work with your editor on projects.

Topic: How to best use open records laws to get what you are looking for and how to overcome common roadblocks when denied public information.

11:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.: How to background using records & online tools
Topic: How are you sure that great source with the perfect quote isn't too good to be true? Even great reporters can get tricked by fake names or sketchy backgrounds. This session walks through some websites - including social media - and strategies you can use to create a routine and spot potential red flags before you get burned.

4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.: Introduction to data journalism/finding data
Topic: An overview of some key tools used in data-driven reporting (spreadsheets, databases, mapping and statistical analysis software). We’ll also discuss what makes a good data story and give examples of stories that were made possible only with these tools.
