Program Overview

The School of Journalism & Media Studies plans to launch a new master’s degree in investigative journalism.

The degree will be modeled after the School’s program for military Public Affairs Officers. That program enables PAOs from the U.S. Navy, Air Force and Marines to complete the master’s degree in mass communication and media studies in 10 months. Students complete the 30-unit program by enrolling in two graduate seminars in the summer, then enrolling in four seminars each of the following two semesters.

Students in the investigative journalism master’s program also would complete a reporting project in collaboration with JMS partners from KPBS Public Broadcasting, which is located on the campus of San Diego State University, as well as journalists affiliated with Envision San Diego, a partnership of media organizations through the region.

JMS faculty currently are developing the curriculum for the new master’s degree in investigative journalism and are engaged in discussions with various media organizations for funding.
