The School of Journalism & Media Studies offers new and continuing graduate students the opportunity to teach undergraduate classes. Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) receive a competative stipend. GTA positions are the primary form of student financial support offered by the School. GTA positions are competative and admission to the program does not ensure the assignment of a teaching assistantship.

If you are interested in a GTA position, please include a paragraph at the end of your statement of purpose that indicates your interest in a GTA position and that notes any professional and/or academic experiences or preparation that might be relevant to evaluating your qualifications for a this position.

The Difference Between Admission to the University and GTA Appointment

A common source of confusion for potential students is the difference between GTA acceptance decisions and Graduate Division acceptance decisions. The Graduate Division, in consultation with Graduate Advisers and the Director of Graduate Studies, determines whether to accept a student into the academic program. In contrast, the decision to accept a student for a GTA position is an entirely separate personnel decision process conducted by the Graduate Division and the University, in consultation with the School of Communication Temporary Hiring Committee. These are distinct application processes involving separate application files, materials, and decision-making bodies. Notification of a GTA position offer does not bear any necessary relationship to acceptance into the MA program. You must be accepted into the program to fulfill the requirements of acceptance of any GTA offer. It is your responsibility to provide all materials to the appropriate offices and persons by the appropriate deadlines.
