To be eligible, undergraduates must graduate by August 2018; recent graduates and graduate students at any level are eligible as long as they will not have received a doctorate by October 2017. Fulbright provides an academic year of full funding for students to conduct research or serve as an English teaching assistant abroad.

2018 SDABJ Scholarship

Eligible Majors: Journalism
Application Period: March 16, 2018

San Diego Association of Black Journalists offers three scholarships to students interested in journalism.

Two $1,000 scholarships will be awarded will be awarded to high school seniors who are interested in majoring in journalism and/or mass communication at a four-year college or university. Must provide proof of enrollment from a four-year college or university to receive funds for this scholarship

A $300 community college scholarship is available for students who are either currently enrolled or looking to attend community college, taking journalism courses, and interested in pursuing a career as a journalist. Must provide proof of enrollment.

Finally, the $1,500 Ozzie Roberts scholarship will be awarded to a student currently enrolled in a four-year college or university who is majoring or minoring in journalism and/or mass communication. San Diego Press Club

Scholarship Amount: $1,500 - $2,500

Applications are being accepted now for scholarships for the 2017/2018 academic year.

Two scholarships will be given: a $1500 award to a community college student and a $2500 award to a four-year University or college student.

The application deadline is April 7, 2017.

Scholarship Eligibility Requirements:

  • Applicants must be accepted for admission and attending as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student during the 2017-2018 academic year.
  • Applicants must intend to pursue a career in journalism.
  • Applicants attending college outside of San Diego County must be a permanent resident of San Diego County. Applicants attending in San Diego need not be San Diego residents.

Winners and their families will be invited to a special luncheon on May 8, 2017. hosted by the San Diego Press Club Board of Directors.

Jim Murray Memorial Foundation Scholarship

Scholarship Amount: $3000

The Jim Murray Memorial Foundation (JMMF) became an official California 501 (c)(3) Nonprofit Corporation on May 17, 1999, to perpetuate Jim Murray’s legacy and his love for and dedication to his extraordinary career in journalism.

The Foundation’s goal is to raise funds throughout the year to provide scholarships for second and third year undergraduate journalism students. The JMMF coordinates a nationwide essay competition, with winners decided by a panel of nationally known journalists. The greater the success of the JMMF's fund-raising events, the more financial support it will provide for talented students.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • An applicant must be a citizen of the United States; pending application for citizenship does not qualify a person to apply.
  • An applicant must have achieved academic standing sufficiently advanced to assure completion of his/her second and/or third year of undergraduate study, achieving junior or senior status for the fall 2018 semester at the University’s School of Journalism, who will graduate in Spring of 2019 or 2020 and not mid-year.
  • An applicant must have at least a “B” (3.0) grade point average and be enrolled full-time.
  • An applicant must show, integrity of character, interest in and respect for his/her fellow humans, and the energy to use his/her writing talents to the fullest extent.

PRSA San Diego Glen Broom Scholarship *NON SDSU SCHOLARSHIP*

Eligible Majors: Public Relations
Application Period: May 4, 2018

Every year, PRSA SD/IC awards the annual Glen Broom Scholarship to a deserving college student who is pursuing their career in public relations. The chapter will award one $1,500 scholarship, and the qualifications are as follows:

  • Full time student at a San Diego area college or university who is a pre-public relations or public relations undergraduate major, or a major in an appropriately related field such as Communications
  • Registered for at least 12 units of undergraduate courses during the fall 2018 semester
  • Intend to pursue a career in public relations
  • Attendance for a full year during the 2018-2019 school year
  • A minimum GPA of 3.0

Application Requirements:

  1. A letter of introduction (no more than two pages, double-spaced) outlining your professional aspirations, why you feel you deserve scholarship support, and what your public relations activities have included. Include information about your extracurricular activities in communications on campus, in the community or during internships
  2. Unofficial college transcript through Fall 2017
  3. A letter of recommendation for this scholarship from a PRSA member or faculty member who is active in public relations, communications or related courses, at the college or university you are now attending

Mindy Gates O’Mary Memorial Scholarship

RTDNF Mike Reynolds Scholarship

Eligible Majors: Journalism
Application Period: May 31, 2017

Mike Reynolds, who died in 1988 of a brain tumor at age 45, was assignment editor and then managing editor at KCCI-TV in Des Moines, IA. This scholarship is awarded to a journalism student with a good writing ability, excellent grades, a dedication to the news business, strong interest in pursuing a career in electronic journalism and a demonstrated need for financial assistance. The recipient of the Mike Reynolds Scholarship will receive $1,000 and an invitation to the Excellence in Journalism conference.

WHO CAN APPLY
  • Students who will be sophomores, juniors or seniors at the time the scholarship is awarded, pursuing careers in radio, television, or digital journalism
  • Winners must be officially enrolled, full-time sophomores or above in good standing when scholarships are awarded
  • Students may apply for only one RTDNF scholarship, and past RTDNF scholarship winners are not eligible.

NAHJ Scholarships

Eligible Majors: Journalism
Application Period: March 17, 2017

Since 1988, NAHJ has awarded nearly $1.6 million in scholarships to more than 700 students. NAHJ scholarship opportunities are open to college-bound high school seniors, college undergraduates and graduate students pursuing careers in English or Spanish-language print, broadcast, digital or photojournalism. Students attending four-year colleges and community colleges in the Unites States and Puerto Rico with a GPA of 2.5 or better are eligible for the scholarships, which range from $2,000 – $5,000.

Gilbert L. Morlan Memorial Scholarship

Eligible Majors: Advertising, Public Relations, Journalism
Application Period: Aug 08, 2016 to Feb 10, 2017 3:00 PM Pacific Time

INDEPENDENT SCHOLARSHIP:
All Independent Scholarships require the submission of an online application and a response to an essay topic or question(s). An Independent Scholarship may also require the submission of additional application materials, such as a letter of recommendation or a resume (see ESSAY and ADDITIONAL APPLICATION MATERIALS at the end of Application Requirements).

E mail and fax submissions of additional application materials will not be accepted. Mailed additional application materials must be postmarked by the deadline date. Late and incomplete submissions will not be accepted.

Scholarships with an application period of August through October are awarded for the current academic year. All others, unless noted, are awarded for the next academic year. To receive the funds, you must be enrolled at SDSU during the academic year for which the scholarship was awarded.

APPLICATION:
 
You must submit a separate application for each SDSU scholarship for which you want to be considered.
  • All scholarships require an essay. Prepare your essay for each scholarship before beginning the online application process. Prepare your essay in a word processing application and copy it into the online application essay text box.
  • Complete your online application by the application deadline.
  • Print a copy of your confirmation page for your records.
  • If the scholarship requires that you submit information in addition to the application and essay, you will be able to print a cover sheet from your scholarship application confirmation page. Attach the printed cover sheet to your additional application materials and submit to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships by the deadline unless specified otherwise (see ADDITIONAL APPLICATION MATERIALS at the end of Application Requirements). ADDITIONAL APPLICATION MATERIALS: 

By the deadline, submit to the Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships the following materials:

ESSAY:Submit an essay of no more than 500 words describing a situation in which you overcame personal challenges in an educational environment. Please also discuss your professional aspirations, why you feel you deserve scholarship support, and how you will use the scholarship funds.

Eligibility Requirements:
  • One or more scholarships may be awarded
  • Minimum 3.00 overall cumulative GPA
  • Upper Division Undergraduate (Junior or Senior)
  • Pre-majors are not eligible
  • Each scholarship award will have a value of at least $1,000
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are registered with Student Disability Services (SDS) or who submit the SDS verification form or a letter from a medical professional documenting their disability.

Carleton-Hunt Internship

Eligible Majors: Journalism
Application Period: Rolling; Students must be enrolled in JMS internship course

THIS IS A PAID INTERNSHIP: 

The School of Journalism & Media Studies will award stipends for a paid journalism internship. Internship may be taken in spring or summer 2016.

Mary Ruth Carleton, vice president for University Relations and Development at San Diego State University, and her husband, Bruce Hunt, established the internship fund in spring 2009 in the School of JMS. Before she became a development officer, Carleton spent nearly 20 years in journalism, working as a news anchor or reporter for ABC, NBC, CBS and Fox in five different media markets.

  • Minimum GPA is 3.0
  • Submit a résumé and a 500-word essay describing your passion for journalism and how this paid internship will make a difference for you
  • Only full-time journalism majors may apply
  • Preference will be given to applicant with financial need
  • Recipients must be enrolled in a journalism internship class during the term in which the funds are disbursed
  • Attach an unofficial transcript to your application
