SDSU Journalism School Joins Google News Lab University Network

August 16, 2017

SDSU Journalism School Joins Google News Lab University Network The School of Journalism and Media Studies at San Diego State University has become the newest member of the Google News Lab University Network, joining the ranks of other prestigious journalism programs across the country.

“The Google News Lab is excited to welcome SDSU to the News Lab University Network, where they will join more than 200+ universities from 40 countries on collaborative efforts around shared curriculum, research, and training,” said Nicholas Whitaker, Training and Development Manager at Google.

The Google News Lab University Network was created in 2016 to help journalism educators and journalism students with training and support. The network extends the work of the Google News Lab that has helped thousands of journalists with a variety of Google tools and resources in a similar capacity.

“This important university network will help our journalism faculty and students develop new skills, as well as build and strengthen our connections with other journalism programs across the country,” said Associate Professor of Journalism Dr. Amy Schmitz Weiss.

The network also provides Google with input from university professors on the company’s educational initiatives in journalism. SDSU journalism faculty will review Google News Lab curriculum materials and provide feedback to Google to enhance the usability of these training tools.

“Like any great educational partnership, the Google News Lab University Network is a win-win-win,” said Dr. Bey-Ling Sha, director of SDSU’s School of Journalism and Media Studies. “Our faculty win by getting classroom support and technology training; Google wins by getting real-time feedback on their materials; and --- most importantly --- our students win by getting access to the latest tools to enhance their future careers in journalism.”

Other journalism programs in the Google News Lab University Network include Arizona State University, University of Missouri, Stanford University, University of Texas at Austin, University of California-Berkeley, and Syracuse University, among others.
