Public Relations Alumnus Tom Gable Endows a Scholarship for Student Interns

San Diego native and SDSU alumnus Tom Gable has created the Tom P. Gable, Jr. Endowed Internship Scholarship in Public Relations, which will provide support to students in the School of Journalism and Media Studies (SJMS). Gable studied journalism while he attended San Diego State and worked for numerous news publications before starting his own public relations firm, The Gable Group and Gable PR.

“The journalism program challenged me in many ways, gave me opportunities to broaden my writing horizons, and provided a solid foundation for my initial career as a journalist, then later in public relations,” said Gable. “I wanted to give back so qualified students could have the benefit of a scholarship to ease the increasingly high cost of education and grow academically.”

The first scholarship will be awarded in the 2018-2019 academic year to a SJMS student who is interning at a public relations agency in San Diego. Students will be required to enroll in the internship class, JMS 490, to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.

Gable is familiar with the high caliber work that students from the School of Journalism and Media Studies can produce.

“Having high-quality interns helped me grow my firms. Because of their training at SDSU, they were able to take on research, writing and other assignments normally given to professionals with a year or two of experience,” said Gable. “Supporting the internship program will be a benefit to our public relations profession.”

While a student at SDSU, Gable was involved at The Daily Aztec, where he learned from Art Wimer and James Julian, both former chairs of the then-Department of Journalism. Gable is currently vice chair of NSTPR, San Diego’s oldest public relations firm. He is an Army veteran of Vietnam, where he served as a combat correspondent for Pacific Stars and Stripes. Gable and his wife Laura, who is also an Aztec for Life, have three grown children and six grandchildren.
