SJMS hosts Resume Workshop with San Diego SPJ and SDSU SPJ
February 02, 2017
The School of Journalism and Media Studies hosted the San Diego Society of Professional Journalists resume workshop on February 2, 2017. 30 students from 6 local universities attended the workshop to get feedback on their resumes from professionals in the industry. The participating professionals represented The San Diego Union Tribune, KPBS, NBC, San Diego Business Journal, inewsource and Voice of San Diego. Below is one SDSU student's experience.
The resume workshop hosted by the Society of Professional Journalists was a wonderful experience, especially as a journalism student seeking jobs and internships. Being able to have one-on-one consultations with media professionals who making hiring decisions was particularly valuable. It was also beneficial to have perspectives from leaders at a variety of outlets including the San Diego Union-Tribune, KPBS, Voice of San Diego, and iNewsource. I learned about what a digital outlet values versus a print or broadcast outlet, and how to tailor my resume depending on the job I am applying for.
Much of what I learned at the resume workshop reinforces what I’ve learned from Nicole Vargas, the JMS internship coordinator at SDSU, who has been instrumental in helping me reach my career goals. This is also the second time I’ve attended the resume workshop with SDSU Society of Professional Journalists. The organization does a great job bringing together students and media professionals for a variety of events throughout the year.
