45 Years of Cell Phones: Reflections on Social Impact

    April 17, 2018

Digital Humanities Center, Library Annex 61
    Martin Cooper

Join Digital Humanities and the School of Journalism & Media Studies for a special event on April 17, 2018. Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone will be on campus to discus the social impact of his invention.

The very first cell phone call was made on April 3, 1973 by Martin Cooper. While working for Motorola, he led the team that developed the innovative technology. There were earlier types of mobile phones, though Cooper’s invention was the first to utilize “cellular technology,” and it began the mobile revolution that has transformed almost every aspect of modern society. In 2007, Time magazine named him one of the top 100 inventors in history.

Now, more than four decades after his famed phone call, Martin Cooper comes to San Diego State University to reflect on the social impact of the cell phone. Some of these changes were anticipated, though as with most technologies, some of the effects were not. Cooper will discuss the technology’s influence on social interactions, politics, along with his thoughts on the persistence of the digital divide. New media technologies can have dramatic effects, though the use of these technologies is not even distributed to all segments of society.

Slow Storytelling in the Digital Age

Slow Storytelling in the Digital Age

    March 05, 2017

    SDSU
    Don Belt

The Center for Science and Media by the School of Journalism and Media Studies and College of Sciences at San Diego State University present Don Belt.

Workshop for Educators
Sunday March, 5 | 1-5 p.m. | PSFA 358

Taught by Don Belt, a veteran National Geographic writer and editor, this 4- hour workshop is for any high school or college educator seeking new ways to teach storytelling in the classroom.

Don will share the ‘slow journalism’ curriculum he teaches at the University of Richmond, based on Pulitzer-winner Paul Salopek’s historic Out of Eden Walk tracing the path of ancient human migration across the world for National Geographic.

Spanning seven years and 21,000 miles, the Walk is a model for in-depth multimedia journalism in the digital age, and a terrific classroom resource for educators in journalism and other subjects.

Supported by the Pulitzer Center on Crisis Reporting, Belt’s Walk on Campus workshop will offer practical tips on bringing an interactive, “hands on” approach to classroom learning—and inspiring your students to participate in a global reporting enterprise.

Space is limited, so please register in advance!

Keynote Lecture
Monday, March 6 | 10-11 a.m. | Gold Auditorium, Donald P. Shiley BioScience Center

Don Belt, a long-time foreign correspondent and editor for National Geographic, describes his own awakening to the power of slow journalism, then takes the audience on a very long walk "Out of Eden" through the multimedia narratives of his colleague Paul Salopek, a two-time Pulitzer Prize winner and National Geographic Fellow.

For his history-making Out of Eden Walk, Salopek is walking 22,000 miles in the pathways of early human migration, from our origins in Ethiopia to the tip of South America. Along the way, he's using the latest advances in digital media to tell the timeless stories of the places and people he meets, creating a unique and moving record of the planet and its people, 2,500 generations after our ancestors walked out of Africa and began to explore the world.

Don and Paul--and San Diego State University--invite you to slow down, bask in the power of storytelling, and retrace our shared human journey. Free and open to the public.

TechRaking: Sensing the News

    February 11, 2017

    Peterson Gym Room 153

Join The Center for Investigative Reporting and the School of Journalism and Media Studies for TechRaking: Sensing the News!

Developed for journalists, designers, technologists and anyone interested in how to use sensors for community engagement, this TechRaking will explore how this nascent stage of the Internet of Things, made up of low-cost sensors and hardware to collect original data, brings unique opportunities and challenges to the newsroom.

Over the course of the day, you’ll hear from industry experts who have created successful sensor projects and stories, learn what is (and what isn’t) possible in implementing sensor technology and what resources are available for newsrooms putting sensor journalism into practice. Attendees will also have a chance to hack a solution to a presented challenge focused on empowering journalists to incorporate sensor tools and techniques into their newsgathering workflows. The winning concept will receive resources post-event to see their idea through to fruition.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Lily Bui, MIT
  • Lorie Hearn, inewsource
  • Travis Good, San Diego Maker Faire
  • Christine Sunu, flashBANG Product Development
  • Andy Wickert, Northern Widget
  • Sean Bonner, Safecast

LDT Virtual Open House

    January 25, 2017

    Zoom

LDT_Symposium

Good afternoon; it's the opening of the Spring semester ... and a great opportunity to share information about our next Virtual Open House!

Mark your calendars for an event I've scheduled for Wednesday, January 25, 2017 @ 5:00 pm/Pacific. Here's the Zoom link you'll use to access the session: https://SDSU.zoom.us/my/bobermichel

I'll be joined by at least one LDT alum ... who will speak to the career opportunities afforded by the LDT program!
As a "teaser" -- please take some time to listen recordings of panels presented by program grads at our Fall Symposium!
Sean Hauze and Scott McAvoy
Devan Probert, Alicia Holdner Campen, and Joe Young

And here are key program highlights of which you should be aware.
All our courses are offered online and are synchronously delivered; we do indeed follow the traditional semester schedule. Our learning management system is Blackboard; the tool by which we meet online is Zoom. Because we're entirety virtual, we can easily accommodate students who live anywhere in California. California residents, of course, pay in-state or residential rate tuition. I do expect the CSU system to institute a small tuition increase in Fall 2017 (probably around 2%); to see what tuition costs are for 2016/17 please see: http://bfa.sdsu.edu/fm/co/sfs/registration.html (and select Spring 2017).

Currently, San Diego State offers only one admission cycle per year -- Fall. Registration opened on October 1; the cycle closes on March 1, 2017.

Admission to the Instructional Design Certificate and Master's degree programs is a two-step process: the CSU system-wide application (CSU Mentor) and then the program-specific application (Decision Desk); both CSU Mentor and Decision Desk are online apps. For additional details, please see: http://jms.sdsu.edu/index.php/admissions/ldt_admissions_requirements.

The Instructional Technology Certificate (15 units, all courses @ the 500-level) does not require admission to SDSU or our program. It is most appropriate for prospective students who do not already hold a bachelor's degree or who wish to simply build performance technology skills to improve marketability. Nine (9) of the 15 units can count toward the Master's degree if one wishes to head in that direction.

Here is what sets Learning Design & Technology apart from other performance technology-oriented programs:

  • a focus on experiential learning. All our classes are project-based.
  • an integration with the community. All courses features assignments and projects brought to us by community members.
  • active alumni involvement. We stay connect with our grads!
  • an emphasis on today's trends: social media, mobile delivery, and so much more.

I look forward to chatting with you!

--Marcie
