Dr. Bernie Dodge joined SDSU as an Assistant Professor of Educational Technology in 1980, and moved to JMS when the Learning Design and Technology program merged in 2014. Dr. Dodge has served on the Educational Advisory Board for Cable in the Classroom, the Advisory Board for the National EMINTS Center, and the Board of Directors of Computer-Using Educators. He was named an Apple Distinguished Educator in 2003, and was the recipient of awards from the Multimedia Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching in 2004 and 2007. He developed the WebQuest model in 1995 and has delivered keynotes and workshops about it in 43 states and 17 countries.

Dr. Dodge earned a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a PhD in Instructional Design from Syracuse University. Currently he teaches courses about games and simulations, virtual and augmented reality, and e-learning design.

Dr. Schmitz Weiss advises students in the M.A. program for mass communication and media studies. She manages applications and advises admitted students on their programs study, the graduate student experience, and the processes for thesis and comprehensive exams. Alexa Mokalis was appointed to the position of Undergraduate Advising Coordinator for the School of Journalism & Media Studies (SJMS) in December 2016. As the Undergraduate Advising Coordinator, Professor Mokalis supervises the SJMS Advising Center, staffed with a team of highly-qualified student advisers who work with her to meet the advising needs of SJMS undergraduate pre-majors, majors and minors.

Professor Mokalis earned her M.A. in Communication (emphasis in Mass Communication & Media Studies) with SJMS in 2014. She first joined the San Diego State faculty in 2012 as a Graduate Teaching Associate (GTA) and has been lecturing for the SJMS since 2014. For more information, see her faculty bio.

Mrs. Peterson is a 2010 public relations alumna from the School of Journalism & Media Studies. During her time as an undergraduate at SDSU, she was a peer adviser for the School, treasurer for the Public Relations Student Society of America, Associated Students representative for the PSFA College Council, and resident adviser with the Residential Education Office. She came home to the School of Journalism & Media Studies in September 2016 after working as a social media manager and public relations coordinator for Comic-Con International. Peterson runs the School’s Twitter account at @SDSU_JMS, and you can also follow her at @michelleclew.

Maggie Shoya is the Office Manager for the School of Journalism and Media Studies. She has a B.S in Business Administration (Information Systems) from San Diego State University. Prior to accepting her position at SJMS, she was the Administrative Coordinator at the SDSU Enrollment Services and with SDSU Research Foundation. She also serves with the SDSU Staff Awards Committee, Explore SDSU Open House, and the Student Research Symposium. She was recognized for significant contribution to the achievement of student Joanrae Miller, a recipient of the Quest for the Best Award 2006.

Bey-Ling Sha (Director) – Dr. Sha has directed the School of Journalism & Media Studies since August 2013. Under her leadership, the School was re-accredited in 2015 by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications. The bilingual media writing program that Dr. Sha launched in 2013 won a 2016 Provost’s Innovation for Excellence Award. Also in 2016, she won the Residential Education Partnership Award, for partnering the School with the Residential Education Office to establish a residential learning community for pre-SJMS majors.
