David M. Dozier (Ph.D., Stanford University, 1978) is a scholar of public relations and communication management. He is a member of the public relations faculty of the School of Communication, San Diego State University, one of the top-ranked public relations programs in the United States. He is the founding Graduate Director for the School of Communication (1995-1998).

The author or co-author of over 50 books, book chapters, articles, and scholarly papers, he is the 1990 recipient of the Pathfinder Award from the Institute for Public Relations Research and Education for his contribution to original scholarly research in the field. With Glen Broom, he authored Using Research in Public Relations: Applications to Program Management (Prentice-Hall, 1990). The book provides working practitioners and students with grounding in public relations research methods and the use of research in management decision making. More recently, he authored (with Larissa and James Grunig) the Manager's Guide to Excellence in Public Relations and Communication Management (Erlbaum, 1995). Written especially for practitioners in managerial positions, the Manager's Guide reports findings of a three-nation, $400,000 study of communication management in over 300 organizations. Funded by the International Association of Business Communicators Research Foundation, the study provides the most comprehensive examination to date regarding communication excellence in organizations and what such excellence contributes to an organization's "bottom line." Dr. Dozier is a principal in Lauzen & Dozier Associates, a communication research and planning consulting firm in San Diego.
