Celebrating the Class of 2012!

2012 Advertising Graduates with Professor Joel DavisMore than 200 Journalism & Media Studies students attended Commencement ceremonies on May 19 at San Diego State University’s Viejas Arena to be recognized by family, friends and faculty.

A total of 37 JMS undergraduate students graduated with honors: Four graduated summa cum laude, with at least a 3.8 GPA; nine graduated magna cum laude, with at least a 3.65 GPA; and 24 graduated cum laude, with at least a 3.5 GPA. Honors graduates included:

Students received bachelor of arts degrees in Journalism, Journalism with an Emphasis in Public Relations, Journalism with an Emphasis in Advertising, and Journalism with an Emphasis in Media Studies, as well as master of arts degrees in Communication with a specialization in Mass Communication and Media Studies. Among the School’s master’s degree recipients were six military Public Affairs Officers, who participated in the seventh year of an accelerated master’s degree program for PAOs. The class of 2012 included PAOs from the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps.

The Outstanding Student in the School of Journalism & Media Studies was Diana Crofts-Pelayo. She also was chosen as the Outstanding Student in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts and spoke to the Class of 2012 during the Commencement ceremony. She selected Amy Schmitz Weiss, JMS assistant professor, as the faculty member most influential in her academic career.
