Because of high student demand, more classroom seats have been added to both sections of JMS 450, Media & Cultures. Section 1 will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in a new classroom, COM-105. Section 2 will meet from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in PSFA-310. Because of high student demand, more classroom seats have been added to JMS 375, Media Technology and the Global Environment, and JMS 408, Media and Society, for fall 2008.

JMS 550

Journalism students may take this class only if they have completed the following courses, with a C or better: JMS 420 and one of the following three courses: JMS 315, JMS 430, or JMS 445. If you have completed these prerequisites and the computer will still not let you register, please call JMS Advising Coordinator Lanie Lockwood at 594-2521. Don't worry: If your catalog year requires JMS 550 and you have met the prerequisites, you are guaranteed a seat in the classes. (Please do not call the Registrar's Office. JMS 461 and JMS 560

Advertising majors: JMS 461 and JMS 560 require completion of JMS 310W and JMS 460 with grades of C or better. The computer will not let you register for JMS 461 and JMS 560 if you have not fulfilled these prerequisites. If you believe you have completed the prerequisites and the computer will still won't allow you to register, please call JMS Advising Coordinator Lanie Lockwood at 594-2521. IMC majors: You will be admitted to JMS 461 and JMS 560 only on a space-available basis beginning the first day of classes. Please take a copy of your transcript, which shows completion of JMS 460 and entrance to the IMC major, to the first class meeting and talk to your instructor.

Media Studies majors

Both classes will be small and are being offered in the evenings, making them great options as you register for the fall semester.

The School of JMS wants to help you graduate on time and so guarantees a seat for you in the required, sequential classes in your major, as long as you successfully meet the prerequisites. If you meet all of the prerequisites, which usually means completion of previous courses with a grade of C or better, you will be guaranteed a place in these required major classes:

Advertising students: JMS 310W, JMS 461, JMS 560, JMS 565
Journalism students: JMS 310W, JMS 420, JMS 315 or 430 or 445 (choice of one), JMS 470, JMS 550
Media Studies students: JMS 412, JMS 450, JMS 492
Public Relations students: JMS 310W, JMS 481, JMS 581, JMS 585

Complete the prerequisite classes

Even though the online registration system might allow you to register for some classes without meeting the prerequisites, the JMS Advising Center advises you NOT to do so. On the first day of class, the instructor will check for prerequisites, and if she or he determines that you have not satisfactorily completed the prerequisites, you will be dropped from the class. You can save time and headaches by paying attention to the footnotes in the course schedule and the course descriptions in the catalog before you register. Also a reminder: Students cannot take a class and its prerequisite classes concurrently (in the same semester).

Journalism majors with catalog year 2006 and earlier

For journalism students with catalog year 2006 and earlier, JMS 315, Editing for Print Media, is a required course. JMS 315 will not be offered this fall, however. If you wish to take a different class in the fall, you may select from the following list:

Students who wish to take JMS 315 may register for the class when it is offered in spring 2009.

Graduate seminar still has seats available

JMS 750, History of the Communication Discipline, is still open and available for graduate registration. Here is a brief synopsis of the course provided by the instructor, Dr. William Eadie:

1. We will begin by studying the biographical history of the discipline, focusing on key figures and their ideas. The major source for this discussion is Everett Rogers' book, A History of Communication Study: A Biographical Perspective. We'll see how communication was defined by individuals from the "speech tradition," the "journalism tradition," and the study of communication that emerged independent of these two traditions and ended up subsuming them both.

2. Second, we will look at how the idea of "communication" has evolved. The lead work that we'll consider in this discussion is John Durham Peters' book, Speaking Into the Air: A History of the Idea of Communication. Peters traces the evolution of the idea of communication from ancient times through the 20th century. Some of his notions will surprise you, particularly his interest in our fascination with attempts to communicate with people we can't see (which range from the dead, through spiritualism, to mass audiences, via electronic media).

3. Third, we will trace the history of communication technology to determine how it influenced the development of our ideas about communication. The key book we'll read for this section will be Daniel J. Czitrom's Media and the American Mind: From Morse to McLuhan. Czitrom's book focuses on the telegraph, the motion picture, and the radio as key elements of transformation.

4. Finally, we'll look at the political history of the discipline, focusing on the controversies that have arisen over the years. In particular, we'll use Robert McChesney's Communication Revolution: Critical Junctures and the Future of Media as a case study. McChesney's book focuses on his personal transformation from empirical social science researcher to critical media scholar and activist.

JMS Advising Center open for spring 2008 registration

If you need help registering for spring-semester classes, the JMS Undergraduate Advising Center is open and staffed with advisers. The hours are:

Wednesday, January 2, through Tuesday, January 15: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wednesday, January 16, and Thursday, January 17: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Advising Center is located in PSFA 366, just across the hall from the main JMS offices. Please bring a copy of your unofficial transcript and your degree evaluation. Advising for Spring '08 Registration

If you have questions about registering for Spring 2008 or want help planning your schedule to make sure you are on track with your major, please visit the JMS Undergraduate advising center BEFORE you leave for winter break. The JMS Advising Center will be open its regular schedule until Finals Week; it will then have a finals week schedule. Once finals are over, the JMS advising center will be closed until after New Year's. We will be open in January during registration, but on a limited schedule.

For those of you needing to change from premajor status to major status: the computer will run an automatic program January 2nd, changing all those whose academic records reflect completion of premajor requirements. If you have questions about this or believe that you will need to be manually changed from premajor to major, please visit the JMS Undergraduate Advising Center for advising on how to proceed.

When a class requires completion of other courses

If a class requires completion of other courses, most times the computer will still let you register. This does NOT mean that you will be allowed to remain in the class. In most cases, the professor will require proof of completion of prerequisites on the first day of classes and if you have not taken the prerequisite course(s), you will have to drop the class. Save yourself headaches and make sure to register only for classes for which you have completed the prerequisite courses.

"Proof of completion of prerequisites" means bringing an unofficial copy of your transcript to show the professor.

A one-paragraph (minimum) justification for why you should be chosen to participate, including a summary of relevant course work and grades
Additional qualifying information, such as job experience and internships

Why Can't I Enroll in a Class?

If you are trying to add a class and Web Portal won’t let you, make note of the reason why registration “failed.” That should help you problem-solve. Also, make sure to look at the footnotes for the class - this will tell you what major you must be in, in order to take the class. If the footnote says, for example, that it is “limited to advertising majors and minors only,” then you must be an advertising major, not an advertising premajor.

Here are some common reasons you aren’t able to register and what to do:

Trying to register for an upper division class (numbered 300 and higher):
You must have earned at least 60 units on your academic record. If you have 59 units or fewer, you will not be allowed to register for the class. You are welcome to come to the first day of class and speak with the professor about getting added to the class. Please bring a copy of your unofficial transcript which will list the number of units you have earned.
1) Trying to enroll in a class “for majors only” and you believe you should be in the major:
If your unofficial transcript lists you as a “premajor” and you have met all the requirements to change from premajor to major, then please contact JMS Advising to see about getting your status changed from premajor to major (594-5145 or Lanie Lockwood 594-2521).
Trying to add a class that has course prerequisites:
The computer will look to see if you have completed the necessary coursework (and necessary grade, if required). You will not be able to register for a class if you are still in progress on a prerequisite class. You must first complete the prerequisite class and take proof of grade in the prerequisite class to the first day of class and speak with the professor.
Trying to add JMS 310W:
Not only must you be admitted to a major in Advertising, Journalism, and Public Relations, you must have also taken and passed the Writing Proficiency Assessment exam. If you have not yet taken the WPA, you will not be allowed to take JMS 310W.
