When it officially begins operations in fall 2007, the School of Journalism & Media Studies will become one of 14 schools and departments in the College of Professional Studies and Fine Arts at San Diego State University.
For the last 12 years, programs in journalism, advertising and public relations have been part of the School of Communication at SDSU. In spring 2006, the University approved the restructuring of the School into two separate academic units, one of which is the new School of Journalism & Media Studies.
The original Department of Journalism was established in 1950 and comprised programs in journalism, advertising and public relations. The new School of Journalism & Media Studies includes those programs as well as a specialization in media studies.
U.S. News & World Report ranked the JMS Public Relations program sixth in the country in 1996.
